OVERALL PURPOSE

The Communications Officer actively contributes to generating awareness and support for Medair’s work in Yemen, with a focus on gathering resources (interviews, photography, videography) and creating relevant content for Medair channels.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, passionate, and a creative communicator with professional experience and skills in communications, fundraising, PR, media or a related field. S/he will be highly motivated, capable of managing an exciting and varied workload, and able to operate in complex but fascinating contexts.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Yemen programme supports vulnerable and displaced communities with multi-sectoral relief programmes including health, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene projects. The Communications Officer will spend a considerable amount of time in the field, collecting stories, resources, photos, working with staff in the Aden and Al Dhale’e bases.

Main duties and responsibilities

GENERAL TASKS  

  • Uphold the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence
  • Respect the Medair values at all times, both within and outside of working hours
  • Know, understand, and comply with Medair internal policies and procedures
  • Adhere to Medair Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) Handbook and regulations

SPECIFIC TASKS

Communications and Fundraising Resources

  • Travel frequently to field sites to collect resources, including photography, interviews, case studies and videos, etc
  • Gather and prepare communication materials for input into online databases
  • Proactively engage in the weekly and monthly regional communications meetings, and the quarterly global editorial meeting, including pitching and collaborating with other Communications Officers from other country programmes.
  • Gather and prepare fundraising materials (e.g. gift handles, direct marketing resources, thank-you videos) in coordination with the Global Support Office in Switzerland or Affiliate offices.
  • Work closely with the Regional Communications Manager (RCM) to gather specific resources for GSO initiatives and projects, the year-end campaign, Yemen first-stop document, events, or other fundraising initiatives
  • Work with Medair affiliate offices to support with content creation for Yemen.  
  • Provide in-country briefings to all staff about their role in communicating about the organisation and its work privately and to support the public communication and fundraising activities of Medair.

Media and Public Relations

  • Regularly monitor local press and events and in case of emergency situations, immediately inform the Regional Communications Manager.
  • Support in preparing, organising, and leading field visits of high profile visitors, photographers, journalists, or media crews. Create an ongoing list of hooks based on current events.
  • Propose stories, press statements and news items according to the brand and media communication guidelines
  • Advise national staff regarding media and communication. Develop key messages with the RCM and provide training to field staff as necessary for interviews.
  • Regularly assess the security and access impact that media reports may have on the programme.

Representation to Local Stakeholders

  • Work with Programmes and Liaison Coordinator to ensure any communications pieces developed are acceptable for local stakeholders
  • Meet with local stakeholders as needed to get approval on communications pieces developed.

Social Media

  • Facilitate and produce short content updates and creative, interactive features on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, in coordination with RCM and GSO
  • Train and encourage field staff on the appropriate use of online social media. Actively monitor Arabic communications initiated by field staff (e.g. social media posts, personal websites, blogs, newsletters, etc.) and if necessary propose corrective actions to ensure strong brand reputation.
  • Work with field staff to explore the use of social media to be used for health and behavioural messaging.

Internal Communication

  • Distribute the Annual Report, newsletters and other communication material among staff and external contacts in the field as appropriate.
  • Actively manage and update internal information documents, such as the First Stop, in collaboration with GSO.
  • Train base staff in Communication Guidelines for Yemen

Institutional & Private Donors Relations, Branding

  • Develop communications materials proactively and reactively for donors to use on their own channels.
  • Collaborate with the PFM to provide input into communication and visibility components of institutional and private funding proposals and reports.
  • Ensure proper field visibility and promote brand image (as per donor requirements)
  • Assist Medair staff on institutional donor and Medair visibility requirements

Degree/professional qualification

Professional qualification in communications/fundraising/PR/media/marketing or a related field

Training or experience in multi-media production and editing

WORK EXPERIENCE

Experience in media, communications, advertising, marketing, or fundraising

Professional experience in a similar position

LANGUAGES

Excellent English (spoken and written) and Arabic (spoken and written)

 

IT

Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

Strong grasp of online social media tools and techniques

Knowledge and experience of photo editing software

Knowledge and experience of video editing software

Advanced data management (i.e., SQL, Qlik, etc)

WORK CONDITIONS

This position will be based in the Medair Aden Office, with frequent trips to other field locations.

Working hours will be 08:00 to 16:30 with 30 minutes for lunch

SALARY: According to Medair standard salary scale

JOB COMMITMENT

TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed Term Contract

PLANNED START DATE: June 2021

TRAINING: As required

DURATION OF COMMITMENT: 6 months, with possible extension
